Rapid Access Chest Pain e-Referrals
This page is aimed at GPs about the referral process and referral forms.
This service is intended for new onset stable angina. Please do not use this pathway for patients meeting the exclusion criteria listed on the referral form.
Exclusion Criteria are:
- Anaemia
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
- Severe aortic stenosis
- Subarachnoid haemorrhage
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- Serious cardiac arrhythmias
- Pulmonary hypertension
- Unstable angina/ ACS
- Cyanotic congenital heart disease
If your patient has any of the above DO NOT REFER to the Chest Pain Clinic. Please refer to Cardiology Outpatients or via medical admissions/ED if urgent.
Prior to referral:
Risk factors should be addressed wherever possible e.g. starting statins, smoking cessation, appropriate blood pressure management
All patients must have an ECG.
All patients must have appropriate screening blood tests including FBC, thyroid, Lipid profile, LFT’s and renal function to check for alternative causes such as anaemia and renal/liver dysfunction. Within 3 months of referral.
Patients need to have had chest X-ray performed within last 6 months of onset of symptoms. To exclude alternative causes of chest pain.
Patient should be considered for a trial of antianginal such as bisoprolol or amlodipine prior to clinic review.
