Cardiac Physiology Service

Cardiac Physiology is a key component of the Cardiology Department providing scientific, clinical, and technical knowledge and expertise to the Cardiology service. It comprises of a team of highly skilled healthcare scientists specialising in the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of patients living with, or suspected of having, cardiac disease.

The Cardiac Physiology Service can be found within the Cardiology Department in South Wing, Level 1.

The service provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic services including electrocardiography (ECG), exercise testing, ECG and blood pressure monitoring and analysis, and echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart).

The Echocardiography Service also offers a range of advanced physiologist-led clinics including:

  • Echo Valve Clinics
  • Echo surveillance for patients receiving chemotherapy
  • Stress echo
  • Echo contrast and bubble studies
  • GP direct access echo.

Patients from other specialties, including Renal, Stroke, Intensive Care, Oncology, Surgical and Paediatrics service may be referred to us to have a number of tests done in either an outpatient or inpatient setting to form part of their assessment or clinic review for other conditions.

Our team of healthcare scientists also provide technical support and active monitoring of patients during diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterisation procedures and provide specialist technical support during cardiac device implantation.

For patients with an implanted cardiac device, the Cardiac Physiology Service provides highly specialist technical support for onward cardiac rhythm management in a range of physiologist-led device clinics.

These include clinics for:

  • Pacemakers including advanced cardiac resynchronisation devices
  • Implantable loop recorders
  • Implanted cardiac defibrillators.

These clinics provide regular checks for patients with these devices to ensure their correct functioning with battery checks and problem solving when required.

The physiologists work closely with the outpatient and inpatient services and support other service provisions with comprehensive cardiac assessment.
