Liquidised Diet

This information is for _____________________________________________________

You have been recommended:

What is a ‘liquidised’ diet?

  • Food is smooth with no lumps.
  • It does not need to be chewed – can be drunk from a cup.
  • It can ONLY be eaten easily with a spoon because it will drip through the prongs of a fork.
  • It does not hold its own shape on a plate.
  • It is not possible to hold the food using fingers.

How do I prepare a ‘liquidised’ diet?

  • Do not liquidise the meal altogether. Blend individual elements of the meal separately to help with variety of flavour and overall enjoyment of the meal e.g. blend the chicken casserole, mashed potato and the carrots separately.
  • Make use of the natural colour of food to ensure variety, for example liquidised fish and sauce, liquidised carrots, and liquidised chocolate dessert.
  • Cut food into small chunks and liquidise small amounts at a time to avoid lumps e.g. remove any tough skins or large seeds.
  • Use a blender or food processor and then push food through a sieve with a spoon.
  • Use extra liquids if needed such as gravy, milk or single cream (try not to use water as this reduces the nutritional value of the food).

Example meal (all liquidised and sieved):
Breakfast: Porridge made with milk or cream.

Lunch: Lentil soup with soft breadcrumbs and grated cheddar cheese until smooth with a consistent texture.

Dinner: Chicken casserole with potatoes and carrots.

Dessert: Smooth full fat yoghurt.
