Fluoroscopy

Updated 23 February 2021

The department uses fluoroscopic x-ray examinations to look dynamically at the body in health and disease.

Examinations performed include assessments of swallowing (performed alongside our colleagues in speech therapy), salivary gland problems, small bowel abnormalities, bladder abnormalities and fertility problems.

Fluoroscopy is also used to evaluate problems in babies and children. Please click here to access information leaflets, which can be used to prepare your child for their fluoroscopic examination.

We also perform specialised examinations of the joints – arthrography – in combination with MRI scanning.

Some patients will need an injection of X-ray dye (we call it ‘contrast’) into a vein in the arm. Further information about the use of contrast media in CT scanning is available here.
