X-ray – Plain Film
We have central booking lines for all GP patients requiring an X-ray. If you have been referred for an X-ray by your GP please wait 48 hours before phoning to book an appointment. This will allow us time to receive and process your request ready for an appointment to be booked.
Plain film X-rays are available at Dorset County Hospital and the community hospitals in Weymouth, Blandford and Bridport.
Weymouth and DCH can be very busy, and patients frequently have to wait two weeks or longer for a non-urgent appointment. Bridport and Blandford are usually able to offer appointments within a day or two.
We are able to offer a walk-in service for chest X-rays only, from 9am to 10am and 2pm to 3pm at all sites.
For all other plain film X-ray examinations patients must ring one of our appointment lines to make an appointment.

The plain film X-ray Department at Dorset County Hospital has modern digital equipment, providing a walk-in service for patients who have been referred for general X-rays from their GP, consultant or healthcare professional (such as a physiotherapist or nurse). A 24/7 service is offered for inpatient referrals from the wards and from the Emergency Department.
The department also provides a walk-in service for patients attending clinics, such as Fracture Clinic or Rheumatology. You will be sent for your X-ray either before or after seeing the consultant, who will be able to view your images instantaneously over the computer system.
Please note, the department can get very busy, so you may be required to wait for your examination. You may be asked to change into a gown for your X-ray in order that high quality images can be produced efficiently.
Children are seen regularly in the department, and our radiographers are tasked with ensuring that your child's journey through the department is as seamless as possible.
Your Results
The doctor or other healthcare professional who referred you for your X-ray will be sent the results of your examination.
