Here at Dorset County Hospital, we take a holistic approach to our patients who are preparing for their surgery. Having surgery is often compared to running a marathon - you need to prepare for it.

We believe that all patients coming in for major surgery such as a joint replacement, removal of gallbladder or as part of their cancer treatment should take steps to improve their body and mind prior to surgery.

There are small things you can do to reduce the risk of complications and increase your chance of a faster recovery. Click here to read more about the lifestyle choices you can make to help aid your recovery.

This section of our website provides information to help you prepare for surgery and achieve the best possible outcome.

The Fitter, Better, Sooner video from the Royal College of Anaesthetists explains how you can prepare for your surgery and reduce the risk of complications.

Information on joint surgery (knee replacements) and general surgery (upper-gastrointestinal surgery, breast surgery, vascular surgery and colorectal surgery) is available below.
