Background
I am a UK trained Ophthalmologist with wide surgical expertise. I completed my Ophthalmology specialist training in Wessex followed by fellowship training in Oxford. I am an experienced high volume cataract surgeon having performed over 6000 cataract procedures till date. I deliver high-quality cataract services for patients with all cataract complexities and my visual outcomes are 100% with one of the lowest complication rates in the UK (as published in the UK National Cataract Surgeons Audit survey of 2018).
I was awarded a PhD for his research into the ‘Immuno-Genetics of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)’ from University of Southampton in 2006 (recipient of NIHR funded PhD research grant). I was also the recipient of a HEFCE senior clinical lectureship award in Medical retina from 2010 to 2015 at Southampton for clinical research and gene therapy for AMD (collaboration with Prof Lotery).
I am actively involved in patient benefit research programmes and NIHR clinical trials. He is currently leading Eye research and novel NHS clinical trials in AMD for patient benefit at REI. He has published a number of peer-reviewed papers on Cataracts and AMD in prestigious international and UK journals. He is a Wessex deanery certified Educational Supervisor and Clinical Tutor.
Special interests
I am currently the Clinical Lead for cataract surgery and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) at REI, DCHFT. Besides AMD, I also have specialist interest in the treatment of other retinal diseases like Diabetic retinopathy, Retinal Vein Occlusions, Uveitis, etc using new injection therapies and laser treatments.
New treatments introduced
New intraocular lens implants including TORIC IOLs for cataract surgery at DCHFT.
New treatment pathways for Cataract Surgery with the introduction of Medisight EPR (Electronic Patient Records) and for Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
Dorset County Hospital ophthalmology department has not been involved in Ophthalmic research till now, but this has changed. Dorset patients had been unable to participate in novel and new clinical ophthalmology treatments until now.
Mr Goverdhan has for the first time started eye research clinical trials with the help of DCHFT research team and we have been able to complete recruitment and exceeded our target for the new STAR AMD clinical trial (ID 18040).
More Clinical trials are being recruited for which will raise the research profile of the Eye Unit at DCHFT besides supporting Wessex recruitment for clinical trials and provide a diversification of trial portfolios in Ophthalmology.
Mr Goverdhan established a world first novel animal model of dry Geographic AMD using laser, he also set up the first laser induced wet AMD animal models for Vision Research Group/collaborators at Southampton University.
