Dorset County Hospital launches Skills Bootcamp in Health and Social Care

Dorset County Hospital (DCH) is launching a Skills Bootcamp in Health and Social Care for adults in Dorset and Somerset who are interested in working in the healthcare sector.

Skills Bootcamps are flexible, government-funded training courses designed for adults aged 19 and over. They provide individuals with the opportunity to gain valuable new skills and knowledge in specific industries or fields.

DCH has been registered as a training provider for Dorset and Somerset and will provide a four-week programme designed to equip learners with the essential skills, knowledge and behaviours needed for a successful career in the health and social care sector.

The Skills Bootcamp in Health and Social Care replaces DCH’s Support Worker Scholarship programme and gives participants the chance to upskill and find out more about a career in health and social care across the sector including hospitals, care homes and other community settings. Participants will gain:

  • essential skills required for healthcare support
  • practical hands-on learning in clinical settings
  • a guaranteed interview with a local health and sector employer at the end of the programme.

Tom Gordon, Widening Participation Lead at Dorset County Hospital said: “We are delighted to be approved as a Skills Bootcamp training provider. This builds upon our successful healthcare support worker scholarship programme and allows people to get an idea of what it’s like to work in health and social care and offers a stepping stone into a new career, whether that be within the NHS or other local health and social care settings.

“As well as learning practical skills and gaining valuable experience, successful participants will get a guaranteed job interview at the end with a local employer, including DCH.”

These courses cater to a wide range of participants, including individuals who are employed full-time or part-time, self-employed, unemployed, or returning to work after a break.

The programme will start in November 2025. Applications close on Friday, 19 September. More information is on the Skills Bootcamp and Social Care page.
